FAQs
Pre-Production FAQs
Clear answers on timelines, coverage, and how we tailor planning to your production.
What's included in pre-production services?
Our full service covers script breakdown, scheduling, and location choice across Chinese provinces. We cast through Beijing agencies and crew up from our OK'd network. Budgets are built in USD with SARFT tax credit math. We also file permits with the China Film Administration and local film bureaus. You get a production-ready package before the cameras roll.
How long does pre-production take?
Locking locations, casting actors, and wrapping SARFT forms for feature films takes at least 8 to 12 weeks. Commercials move faster and need just 2 to 4 weeks when shoot sites are easy to reach. For documentaries, the pace depends on how quickly you gain access and book interviews. We can speed things up when needed, though Chinese rules on permit processing set firm time limits.
Do you work with international productions shooting in China?
That's our specialty. We bridge global production firms with Chinese crews, vendors, and authorities. Our team handles it all, from carnet needs for gear crossing borders to Chinese union setup and the SARFT co-production rules. Most of our clients are UK, US, German, and Asian productions shooting on Chinese soil.
Can you work within a specific budget?
We build budgets in USD with detailed line items that match the formatting standards of the Chinese industry. If you have a target number, we'll tell you honestly what's doable, whether that means adjusting the schedule, finding other locations, or reshaping the crew. We'd rather have a frank talk upfront than spring surprises later.
What happens if permits get denied or locations fall through?
It happens, and we plan for it. Every location package we deliver includes backup options, and we keep close ties with Chinese property owners and film commissions to absorb sudden changes. Our location managers have pulled off same-week replacements for everything from ancient palace and temple shoots to Chinese apartment interiors.
