SCENE 01 / PRODUCTION INSURANCE

Production Insurance

Comprehensive insurance solutions for film productions in China.

Scroll

Production insurance guards against the money risks built into filmmaking. In China, required social insurance covers local crew, and sites run by cultural heritage authorities need their own liability cover. Foreign shoots must handle rules that differ sharply from Western insurance markets.

We set up production insurance through brokers skilled in China's film industry, so global coverage standards meet local rules. Our team arranges policies that satisfy Chinese social insurance duties, location mandates, and global distribution standards.

On Location

Chinese cover that satisfies local regulators and global distributors

Production insurance in China must satisfy two audiences at once. Local rules come from the Chinese Civil Code and the Labor Law of the PRC. Global distributors and TV networks then need coverage that travels. Required social insurance (社保) and work injury insurance (工伤保险) sit on each Chinese crew member's forms. City film bureaus watch employer liability and public liability limits closely, and CAAC drone operator coverage must be in place before a single aerial unit lifts.

Heritage locations are run by the cultural relics bureau and the Ministry of Culture and Tourism. The Forbidden City perimeter, the Great Wall sections at Mutianyu, Badaling, Jinshanling and Simatai, the Terracotta Army site at Xi'an, the Mogao Caves at Dunhuang, and the Suzhou classic gardens each carry their own liability needs. CFCC will not issue a co-production permit until insurance evidence is on file for the full schedule.

We set up placement through Chinese brokers and global entertainment experts skilled in mainland production. Most work runs through Ping An, China Life and PICC entertainment lines, plus Lloyd's-syndicate partners for cast and negative cover. Cast insurance, negative and media coverage, gear and props (including ATA carnet alignment for kit moving in and out of mainland customs), errors and omissions, and extra-costs protection are all sized to each project's real exposure. That ranges from a single-day commercial in Sanlitun or the Bund to a three-month feature moving between Hengdian, the Yunnan plateau and the Hainan coast.

Certificates go out within twenty-four hours of binding. We keep close ties with NRTA, CFCC, MCT and provincial film bureaus, so we can prove cover fast when a permit is in flight. If a claim comes up during the shoot, we handle the forms, work with adjusters in CNY or US dollars under SAFE rules, and keep your production accounting team supplied with what they need.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What insurance do I need for filming in China?

At minimum you need public liability, gear coverage, and often cast insurance. We review your production and suggest full coverage, including workers compensation, car insurance, and E&O as needed.

How quickly can you arrange insurance?

We can place standard production packages within 24-48 hours. Tricky shoots or specialist coverage may need more time. Certificates of insurance go out within 24 hours of binding.

Does Chinese production insurance differ from other countries?

China has its own rules, including required employer liability coverage, and some locations need higher public liability limits. We make sure all coverage meets Chinese regulations.

How do you handle claims?

We give full claims support, including first reporting, records help, and advocacy with insurers. Our aim is a fast outcome with little disruption to your shoot.

Productions in China that need this often pair it with Filming Permits & Licenses, Contract Management Services, and Health & Safety Compliance for full coverage. Most projects also draw on Safety Officers.
