Creative Direction

Creative direction in China draws on a visual lineage that runs from Tang Dynasty court painting through the Fifth Generation cinema of Zhang Yimou and Chen Kaige into the contemporary work of Jia Zhangke, Bi Gan, and Frant Gwo. Our creative directors operate out of studio neighbourhoods near Beijing Film Academy in Haidian, the production lofts around Shanghai's Jing'an and Xintiandi, and the design ecosystems clustered in Shenzhen's OCT-Loft and Chengdu's emerging creative quarters.

Here is how this works in practice. They bring instincts shaped by working alongside cinematographers in the tradition of Zhao Xiaoding, Yu Lik-wai, and Christopher Doyle, and they know how to read the visual contrasts that define Chinese storytelling — the imperial geometry of the Forbidden City, the karst dreamscape of Yangshuo, the Republic-era streets at Hengdian, the Pudong skyline at dusk, and the village courtyards of Hongcun that anchored Crouching Tiger.

The role on set is more than aesthetic guidance. Our creative directors translate a director's vision into a unified language that production designers, costume departments, hair and makeup teams, and cinematographers from Beijing Film Studio and Shanghai Film Studio can act on consistently. They navigate NRTA content sensitivities at the conceptual stage, work with CFCC liaison on co-production creative parameters, and shape mood references that align with the location plan.

The picture on the ground is more specific. Whether the shoot reaches the Mutianyu Great Wall, the Yu Garden in Shanghai, the Mogao Caves outside Dunhuang, or the Tibetan-influenced highlands around Shangri-La. Style guides are produced bilingually for crew distribution, decisions are documented for the line producer and unit production managers, and on-set creative supervision flexes around the pace Chinese productions are known for. The long single-shift days, the Hengdian backlot turnaround, and the Pingyao or FIRST IFF aesthetic ambitions productions inherit when they shoot here.
