Creative Direction

Creative direction in China draws on a long visual line. It runs from Tang Dynasty court painting, through the Fifth Generation cinema of Zhang Yimou and Chen Kaige, into the modern work of Jia Zhangke, Bi Gan, and Frant Gwo. Our creative directors work out of studio neighbourhoods near Beijing Film Academy in Haidian, the production lofts around Shanghai's Jing'an and Xintiandi, and the design scenes clustered in Shenzhen's OCT-Loft and Chengdu's growing creative quarters.

Their instincts come from working beside cinematographers in the tradition of Zhao Xiaoding, Yu Lik-wai, and Christopher Doyle. They know how to read the visual contrasts that define Chinese storytelling — the imperial geometry of the Forbidden City, the karst dreamscape of Yangshuo, the Republic-era streets at Hengdian, the Pudong skyline at dusk, and the village courtyards of Hongcun that anchored Crouching Tiger.

On set, the role goes beyond aesthetic guidance. Our creative directors turn a director's vision into one shared language that production designers, costume teams, hair and makeup crews, and cinematographers from Beijing Film Studio and Shanghai Film Studio can all act on. They handle NRTA content sensitivities at the concept stage, work with the CFCC liaison on co-production creative terms, and shape mood references that match the location plan.

On the ground, the picture gets more specific. A shoot might reach the Mutianyu Great Wall, the Yu Garden in Shanghai, the Mogao Caves outside Dunhuang, or the Tibetan-influenced highlands around Shangri-La. For each, style guides are produced bilingually for the crew, decisions are logged for the line producer and unit production managers, and on-set creative oversight flexes around the pace Chinese shoots are known for. That pace means long single-shift days, fast Hengdian backlot turnarounds, and the Pingyao or FIRST IFF aesthetic ambitions that shoots inherit when they work here.
