Concept Development Services

Concept development for shoots in China draws on a deep visual culture. It runs from Tang Dynasty scroll painting through Fifth Generation cinema to the modern box-office wins of Wandering Earth and Dying to Survive. Our concept partners work from the studio blocks around Beijing Film Academy in Haidian, the design lofts of OCT-Loft in Shenzhen, and the Bund-adjacent agencies in Shanghai's Huangpu district. They also tap the smaller but distinct scenes in Chengdu and Hangzhou, where directors trained at the Central Academy of Drama keep pushing image-making forward.

We turn an early brief into Chinese-market concepts tied to specific places and palettes: the imperial ochres of the Forbidden City and Temple of Heaven, the cool greys of Pudong Lujiazui at night, the misty karst of Guilin and Yangshuo, the ink-wash mountains of Huangshan, the Anhui village geometry of Hongcun and Xidi that shaped Crouching Tiger, and the Republic-era streets kept at Hengdian.

Our process is workshop-driven rather than waterfall. It starts with a discovery session that maps creative goals against NRTA script-approval realities, CFCC co-production status, and the permits needed for Tiananmen-area or military-adjacent locations. We then build concept directions in parallel, usually two or three working ideas, and refine them through reference work drawn from Zhang Yimou, Wong Kar-wai, Jia Zhangke, and the modern cinematography of Zhao Xiaoding and Christopher Doyle.

Each refined concept arrives as a structured package: a written treatment, mood references, location options tied to provincial film bureau access, talent direction in the Beijing Film Academy and Shanghai Theatre Academy traditions, and a feasibility note that flags budget bands, permit timelines, and Qingdao or Wuxi provincial rebate eligibility. Clients leave with a concept that can survive real Chinese production and reach the next pre-production stage with momentum.
