Sound Design

Sound design for productions shot in China draws on a community of designers anchored around the Beijing and Shanghai post-production cluster — Beijing Film Group Audio (with Dolby Atmos certification on the theatrical mix stages), Mango Sound Beijing on the capital's broadcaster-side post chain, the in-house design suites at iQIYI Audio and Tencent Audio Studio servicing the streaming platforms directly, Bird Audio Beijing for indie and festival features, Shanghai Film Studio Audio and Pacific Audio Visual on the Yangtze, plus the Wanda Studios design bays at Hengdian and Qingdao (Qingdao also Atmos-certified) carrying the domestic tentpole pipeline.

Here is how this works in practice. Our team coordinates spotting sessions early, scoping the project's sonic palette against the visual context: a Shanghai shikumen-set crime drama with neon-and-rain texture and contemporary urban density reads very differently from a Yunnan rural feature with mountain wind and water, a Tibetan high-altitude piece with thin-air silence and prayer-flag percussion, a Forbidden City period drama needing stone-courtyard reverb and lacquered-wood foley palette, or a Hengdian-shot wuxia tentpole with sword-clash and qing-gong choreography.

The picture on the ground is more specific. Designers build atmospheres, impact effects, transitions and creature work to picture, recording original source material on location where the budget permits — Beijing hutong activity, Shanghai Bund water and ship-horn texture, Yunnan rural ambience, Tibetan altitude wind — then layering with synthesis and library material in Pro Tools HDX sessions.

The work covers every genre Chinese production exports. Wuxia and xianxia period epic in the Zhang Yimou and Chen Kaige lineage, contemporary crime thriller for iQIYI and Tencent Video, supernatural horror, science-fiction tentpole in the Wandering Earth franchise direction, festival arthouse bound for Cannes, Berlin or Venice, mainland drama for CCTV and Mango TV, streaming originals for iQIYI, Tencent Video and Youku, plus Hong Kong co-productions and international Netflix, Prime Video and Disney+ work licensed in or out.

A few details matter here. And our designers move fluently between cinematic conventions and the looser, more experimental palette streaming originals invite. Works-in-progress are shared at agreed milestones so directors and editors feed back early on key sonic decisions, and picture changes are accommodated through to final mix when the schedule demands it. Mix-ready sessions arrive at the dub stage organised into clearly named stems — atmospheres, hard effects, designed elements, transitions, creature, mechanical, vehicle, traditional weapon — labelled per scene with full session paperwork, ready for the supervising sound editor and re-recording mixer to integrate. International clients attend reviews remotely via Source-Connect on GMT+8 schedules with full-resolution picture, talkback and clip approval to the design suite.
