Sound Design

Sound design for shoots in China draws on a community of designers based around the Beijing and Shanghai post-production cluster. Beijing Film Group Audio holds Dolby Atmos certification on its theatrical mix stages, and Mango Sound Beijing sits on the capital's TV networks-side post chain. The in-house suites at iQIYI Audio and Tencent Audio Studio serve the streaming sites directly. Bird Audio Beijing handles indie and festival features. Shanghai Film Studio Audio and Pacific Audio Visual work the Yangtze. The Wanda Studios design bays at Hengdian and Qingdao carry the domestic tentpole pipeline, with Qingdao also Atmos-certified.

Our team runs spotting sessions early, scoping the sonic palette against the visual context. A Shanghai shikumen-set crime drama with neon-and-rain texture and dense urban feel reads very differently from a Yunnan rural feature built on mountain wind and water. So does a Tibetan high-altitude piece with thin-air silence and prayer-flag percussion, a Forbidden City period drama that needs stone-courtyard reverb and a lacquered-wood foley palette, or a Hengdian-shot wuxia tentpole with sword-clash and qing-gong choreography.

On the ground, the work gets more specific. Designers build atmospheres, impact effects, transitions, and creature work to picture, and they record original source material on location where the budget permits. That source can be Beijing hutong activity, Shanghai Bund water and ship-horn texture, Yunnan rural ambience, or Tibetan altitude wind. They then layer it with synthesis and library material in Pro Tools HDX sessions.

The work spans every genre Chinese production exports. That covers wuxia and xianxia period epics in the Zhang Yimou and Chen Kaige lineage, modern crime thrillers for iQIYI and Tencent Video, supernatural horror, and science-fiction tentpoles in the Wandering Earth vein. It also covers festival arthouse bound for Cannes, Berlin, or Venice, mainland drama for CCTV and Mango TV, and streaming originals for iQIYI, Tencent Video, and Youku. On top of that come Hong Kong co-productions and global Netflix, Prime Video, and Disney+ work licensed in or out.

A few details matter here. Our designers move easily between cinematic norms and the looser, more experimental palette that streaming originals invite. We share works-in-progress at agreed milestones, so directors and editors can feed back early on the key sonic choices. Picture changes are folded in through to final mix when the schedule demands it. Mix-ready sessions reach the dub stage as clearly named stems — atmospheres, hard effects, designed elements, transitions, creature, mechanical, car, traditional weapon. Each stem is labelled per scene with full session notes, so the supervising sound editor and re-recording mixer can slot them in fast. Global clients join reviews remotely through Source-Connect on GMT+8 schedules, with full-resolution picture, talkback, and clip approval to the design suite.
