SCENE 01 / LED WALL VIRTUAL
LED Wall Virtual Production
In-camera visual effects for your Chinese production.
LED wall virtual production uses large LED display volumes to project real-time environments behind performers. This swaps the old green screen for lifelike in-camera backgrounds. China hosts some of Asia's most ambitious virtual production setups. Qingdao Oriental Movie Metropolis (Wanda) runs 40+ stages, including underwater tanks. Hengdian World Studios operates over 130 stages, and the world's largest reaches 12,000m² and supports the Wandering Earth franchise.
We connect you with LED wall studios and Unreal Engine teams across China. Post houses back the work, among them Base FX, Digital Domain China, MPC Shanghai, Mindwalk Studios and Light Chaser Animation. Our team sets up stage booking through local partners, virtual art department resources and provincial subsidies run by the China Film Administration, so your project gets a full ICVFX pipeline.

On Location
ICVFX volumes from Qingdao Wanda to Songjiang Shanghai
LED wall virtual production swaps the old green screen for a large display volume that projects lifelike environments behind performers. The camera captures it directly, with true lighting, eye reflections and parallax-correct backgrounds at every focal length. China now hosts some of Asia's most ambitious ICVFX setups and is adding capacity fast. Qingdao Oriental Movie Metropolis runs forty-plus stages, including underwater tanks and dedicated virtual production volumes built into the Wanda complex, and it anchors the city's forty-per-cent rebates for qualifying shoots.
Hengdian World Studios operates over 130 stages, and the world's largest spans 12,000 square metres. Its integrated real-time rendering pipelines support the Wandering Earth franchise and other tentpole features. The Shanghai Songjiang Film Industrial Park has built a dedicated LED volume that anchors a growing commercial and episodic pipeline. Extra XR studios sit across Beijing and Shanghai. Work from Pixomondo Beijing, More VFX, Tencent Animation and Bilibili shoots rounds out the national capacity for commercials, music videos and branded content for tech and automotive brands.
Real-time rendering runs on Unreal Engine 5 through partnered virtual art departments. Chinese virtual production supervisors staff them, trained at the Beijing Film Academy, with post-prod support from Base FX Beijing, MPC Shanghai, Digital Domain China and More VFX. Our crew builds environments from photogrammetry of real Chinese locations: the Forbidden City and Beijing hutong districts, the Bund and Pudong skylines in Shanghai, the karst peaks of Guilin and Zhangjiajie, Sichuan mountain ranges and the Tibetan plateau.
Our team also designs sci-fi, period and impossible-location worlds from scratch, using the standing sets where around seventy per cent of Chinese period dramas already shoot at Hengdian. Camera tracking through Disguise locks parallax to the moving camera, so the wall responds correctly through dollies, jibs, Steadicam and handheld shots. Our colour scientists match the LED panels to the cinema camera and post pipeline before stage day. Post and finishing run through Base FX Beijing, MPC Shanghai, Digital Domain China, Mindwalk Studios and Light Chaser Animation Shanghai. We handle NRTA sign-ups and CFA forms, secure provincial production subsidies, manage 17-per-cent VAT paperwork and set up the Chinese co-producer relationship that foreign shoots need under the China Film Administration framework.
FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
What is LED wall virtual production?
LED wall virtual production, also called ICVFX (In-Camera Visual Effects), uses large LED displays to show real-time environments behind actors. The camera captures both the performers and the background at once, which gives lifelike lighting and reflections.
What are the advantages over green screen?
LED walls light actors naturally and catch true reflections in eyes and surfaces. Actors can also see the world they perform in. Because the shot is captured in-camera, post-prod VFX work drops.
What kind of environments can you create?
Almost any environment works, from real Chinese locations such as the Forbidden City, the Great Wall, Hutong districts and Sichuan mountains to sci-fi worlds and past eras. Around 70% of Chinese period dramas use Hengdian's standing sets. We can pair these with photogrammetry assets in Unreal Engine.
Do you have LED stages in China?
Yes. Qingdao Oriental Movie Metropolis and Wanda Studios in Qingdao hold advanced virtual production and motion capture stages. Hengdian World Studios runs real-time rendering pipelines. Most foreign shoots need a Chinese local partner.
How does camera tracking work?
Camera tracking gear reads the camera's exact position and rotation in real time. The virtual world then shifts with the right parallax as the camera moves, which creates convincing changes in perspective.
What's involved in pre-production?
Virtual production needs heavy pre-production: building digital environments, planning camera moves and tech setup. An early start gives you time to develop assets and refine creative choices.
