Sound Mixer Services

Top-tier production sound across Beijing, Shanghai, and all of China.

A sound mixer, also called the production sound mixer, captures all on-set audio. That covers dialogue, ambient sound, and effects. The mixer picks and places microphones and rides the levels in real time. That way, each take gives clean, usable recordings. Production sound in China spans very different conditions, from the calm stages of China Film Group Studios in Beijing to busy Shanghai streets. It takes real skill.

We connect you with production sound mixers who deliver broadcast-quality audio in any setting. Our network reaches Beijing, Shanghai, and Hengdian. These mixers are skilled at major Chinese studios and on global co-productions around the country.

Production sound from the BFA and CUC pool tuned to Chinese post pipelines

Production sound in China grows out of the Beijing Film Academy audio engineering programme and the Communication University of China sound design track. These feed the working pool of production sound mixers. They handle Chinese theatrical features, iQIYI and Tencent Video premium drama, and CCTV serial work. They also cover the high-end commercial campaigns from the Huawei, Xiaomi, DJI, BYD, Tencent, and Alibaba brand orbits.

China has no formal equivalent of IATSE Local 695, so the mixer community works informally through the Chinese Filmmakers' Association and the China Film and Cinematographer Society. Our mixers come from that register. They work daily out of Hengdian World Studios in Zhejiang, Wanda Studios Qingdao, Shanghai Songjiang Film Industry Park, and the Beijing Film Group lots.

The setup on the ground is quite specific. On a typical day the hardware is a Sound Devices 833 or 888 recorder, or a Zaxcom Nova or Maxx. It pairs with Lectrosonics SRc and SMQV transmitters and Wisycom MCR54 receivers set up under MIIT range allocations. Sennheiser MKH416 boom rigs and DPA, Sanken, and Countryman lavalier kits keep dialogue clear. Full timecode sync goes to camera before the first slate.

Working settings span Hengdian Tang and Song imperial street sets, Beijing hutong courtyards, Shanghai Bund heritage interiors, the dense Pearl River Delta cities of Guangzhou and Shenzhen, the karst hills of Guilin and Yangshuo, Sichuan mountain exteriors, and Hainan beach work. Each one brings its own acoustic challenge. Mixers pick microphone packages and wireless plans to suit the location. That could mean close-miked plant mics for a dialogue-heavy iQIYI drama interior. It might mean wider boom coverage and windjammer protection for a Hainan coastal commercial or a Tibetan high-country sequence. In Shanghai Pudong's RF-dense skyscraper canyons, it calls for careful frequency scans.

Crews work smoothly with the post pipelines at Beijing's mixing stages. These include Phoenix Mountain Sound, the iQIYI Post audio bays, and the Tencent Pictures Post facility. They also prepare the paperwork a global shoot needs to enter the Qingdao 40% rebate process. Our coordinators match each mixer to the brief on confirmed credits and the attached post-prod facility, not on access alone.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What does a sound mixer do?

A sound mixer, also called a production sound mixer, leads the sound department on set. The mixer records and blends all dialogue, ambient sound, and effects during filming. That means handling microphone placement, signal levels, and recording gear. The goal is clean, usable audio that meets post-prod standards.

What skills should a sound mixer have?

A sound mixer needs a sharp ear and deep tech knowledge of recording gear and acoustics. The role also calls for solving audio problems fast in tricky settings. The mixer must know how to pick and place microphones, plan wireless frequencies, and prepare recordings for the post-prod mix.

What types of productions need a sound mixer?

Any production that records dialogue or live sound needs a sound mixer. Feature films, television series, documentaries, commercials, and corporate videos all rely on quality production sound. The mixer's work shapes the clarity and emotional pull of the final audio.

How do you match a sound mixer to my production?

We review your audio needs, shooting settings, and how complex your sound demands are. Then we suggest mixers with the right experience. Our team weighs things like location acoustics, the number of actors in dialogue scenes, and any special recording challenges your project brings.

What equipment does a sound mixer use?

A sound mixer runs a portable mixing console or recorder, many wireless and boom microphone systems, and tracking gear. The mixer carries a range of microphones suited to different recording setups and uses timecode systems to sync audio with the camera department's footage.
