Focus Pullers / 1st ACs

Pro focus pullers delivering sharp, precise images for your Chinese production.

A focus puller, also called the 1st Assistant Camera, keeps sharp focus on the subject during each take. In China, shoots range from studio work at Hengdian World Studios to tough location shoots across Shanghai and beyond. Precise focus pulling needs both tech mastery and the skill to adapt to each shooting setting.

Our NeedAFixer network connects you with skilled focus pullers across China, and each one brings reliability and precision to every scene. Our 1st ACs know all major camera systems and have strong ties with Chinese camera rental houses, so each frame stays critically sharp whether you shoot in Beijing or on location across the country.

On Location

1st ACs trained on China's working camera ecosystem

Focus pulling on Chinese shoots is a precision craft, shaped by the country's favored camera rental ecosystem. A few senior packages dominate. ARRI Alexa 35 and Mini LF kits come from Beijing Film Gear and Shanghai Film Studio rental arms. Sony Venice 2 and Burano bodies stay in active use on iQIYI and Tencent Video originals. RED V-Raptor and Komodo setups run on global commercials, and the Shenzhen-built DJI Ronin 4D gimbal platform serves mid-tier feature and brand work.

Our lens pairings across Chinese drama, feature, and high-end commercial work include Cooke S7/i, Zeiss Supreme Prime, Leitz Thalia, ARRI Signature Prime, and DZOFilm Vespid cine primes. Our 1st ACs have prepped, broken down, and worked inside these packages on call sheets that range from Frant Gwo's Wandering Earth saga through iQIYI premium drama, Tencent Video originals, and global commercials shot from Shanghai's Anfu Road and Beijing's 798 agency belt.

The picture on the ground is more specific. Our 1st ACs run wireless follow-focus systems, including Preston FI+Z, ARRI WCU-4, and Tilta Nucleus-M. They mark in either centimetres or feet to match the DP's preference, and they keep working ties with Beijing and Shanghai prep technicians, so gear leaves the loading bay ready for the unit.

On a Chinese drama unit running long dialogue blocks at Hengdian World Studios or Qingdao Wanda, a skilled 1st AC holds key focus through eight-minute oners on T1.5 prime sets, with a depth of field measured in millimetres. At the same time, they support the operator through Steadicam and Trinity coverage and manage a 2nd AC team on slating and clapper duty, in line with BFA and SOC Asia working standards.

A few details matter here. On commercial work in Shanghai's Anfu Road, Wukang Mansion, and Beijing's 798 districts, our focus pullers turn over fast across many lens swaps per setup. They manage filter trays under the tight schedule Chinese luxury and automotive agencies set, and they translate cleanly between English-speaking global DPs and Chinese grip and electric departments. On action and stunt-heavy content for the Wandering Earth-tier feature pipeline, they run remote focus across crash boxes, car mounts, and stunt rigs, with the safety habits Chinese production unions expect. Before we add any 1st AC to a shortlist for global shoots in China, we check camera-system breadth, prior credit list, English working ability, and BFA or SOC Asia standing.
