Gaffer & Lighting Services China
Pro gaffers and lighting crews skilled in LED, HMI, and tungsten \t\t\t\t\t\tsystems. From small interviews to large night shoots across China.
The gaffer is the chief lighting technician, and the role is to design and run the lighting plan set by the director of photography. Chinese shoots span many settings, from Beijing studios to Shanghai locations and beyond. Skilled gaffers handle shifting power setups, weather, and the gear on hand from Chinese rental houses.
Our NeedAFixer network links you with skilled gaffers and grips across China who blend smoothly with your camera team. These pros know studio and location lighting, they rig for tough settings, and they run the electrical and mechanical systems that modern shoots need. Each one carries strong ties to Chinese gear suppliers and rental houses.

On Location
Chinese electric and grip departments built around the BFA-trained gaffer pool
Lighting and grip departments in China are built around a working pool of gaffers and key grips trained at Beijing Film Academy and Communication University of China. They shuttle weekly between Hengdian World Studios in Zhejiang, Wanda Studios Qingdao on the Shandong coast, Shanghai Songjiang Film Industry Park, and the Beijing Film Group lots up north. Our department heads carry firm credits across Chinese theatrical features, iQIYI and Tencent Video premium drama, CCTV-backed serial work, and the high-end commercial campaigns running out of the Huawei, Xiaomi, BYD, and Alibaba brand orbits.
The gear they handle on a given day shows that China now sets the pace for the global LED market. A typical package runs Aputure Shenzhen 1200d Pro, 600x, and 300x heads, plus Nanlite Forza and Evoke FS series and Godox KNOWLED MG series. Crews pair these with ARRI SkyPanel S60 and S30 banks for soft daylight, M-Series HMI heads for exterior fill, Mole-Richardson tungsten units for period work in the Hengdian Tang and Song imperial street sets, and Astera Titan tubes for tight, practical-heavy Beijing hutong and Shanghai shikumen interiors.
Grip and electric kit flows through the Aputure-anchored Shenzhen distribution network, the Beijing rental houses around the Bayi Film Studio district, and Shanghai's Songjiang vendor cluster. So dolly track, jib arms, Movi Pro sleds, condor work, and full 220V/50Hz distribution can go into one package instead of being chased across many vendors. We set up power packs hire and city tie-ins under State Grid (国家电网) protocols. For shoots pushing into Tibet's 3,400m-plus elevations or Yunnan high-country exteriors, we source altitude-derated kit.
Riggers and electrics come up through the BFA tech track and on-set apprenticeships at Hengdian, Qingdao Wanda, and Chedun, and crews scale honestly to the lighting plan. A single-camera Beijing tech-brand interview travels with a gaffer plus best boy, while a Hengdian period-drama night exterior or a Sanya beach-front commercial shoot gets rigging electrics, balloon-light operators, and dedicated power packs ops. International DPs sign on without language friction, since our department heads have shipped Chinese co-productions and global tier-one streaming Originals to delivery in English.

FAQ
Our Lighting Network
What does a gaffer do on set?
The gaffer heads the electrical and lighting department and brings the DP's lighting vision to life. They design the setups, lead the electric crew, rig the gear, and keep power safe across the production.
What crew positions are in a lighting department?
A full lighting department has the Gaffer as department head, the Best Boy Electric as the gaffer's assistant who runs crew and gear, and Electricians or Sparks who set up and work the lights. Larger shoots add Rigging Gaffers and Generator Operators.
Do your lighting crews bring their own equipment?
Crew and gear are mostly booked apart. We can set up gear packages from Chinese rental houses to round out your crew booking. Some gaffers own kit for smaller shoots.
How many electricians do I need for my production?
Crew size tracks the scale of the shoot. Small jobs may need just a gaffer, while medium ones want a gaffer plus best boy and 1-2 electricians. Larger shoots need full departments with rigging crews.
Can your lighting crews work with international DPs?
Yes. Our gaffers work well with global cinematographers and know their terms, techniques, and workflow.
Do you provide generators and power distribution?
We set up power packs hire and distribution gear through our Chinese rental partners. Power packs operators come in crew packages for shoots that need major power setups.
