Boom Microphones

Boom microphone work in China lives between two very different acoustic worlds. The reverberant stone interiors of a Forbidden City or Pingyao Ancient City heritage shoot under NRTA permit, and the open coastal air of a Hainan or Qingdao exterior with monsoon humidity and a sea breeze coming off the Bohai by noon. Boom poles run from two-metre travel units up to six-metre full-reach K-Tek and Ambient builds with internal cable routing, sourced mostly through Mango Sound Beijing and Bird Audio and prepped at our Beijing facility before delivery.

Wind protection is paired to the actual location forecast. Rycote Cyclone and Cinela Pianissimo kits for the Gobi sandstorms that hit Inner Mongolia unit bases, lighter Softie covers for the controlled interiors at Beijing Film Studio and Songjiang Film Industrial Park. Every booking ships as a complete boom package: microphone, pole, shock mount, windscreen, XLR cabling, and the accessory loadout the boom operator needs to swap configurations between scenes without leaving set.

Here is how this works in practice. Backup capsules travel with longer schedules so a failed transformer on an MKH 416 mid-week in a Tibet altitude exterior does not stall the recording chain. Chinese Filmmakers' Association-affiliated boom operators trained at the Beijing Film Academy are bookable alongside the gear, and technical support runs through the shoot day across Beijing, Shanghai, Hengdian, and the regional unit bases that NRTA co-production approvals tend to spread across.
