Green screen filming in China runs on one of the deepest studio infrastructures on earth. Hengdian World Studios in Zhejiang is the largest film backlot complex in the world with more than 130 sound stages — including a 12,000m² behemoth that ranks as the largest chroma-key-capable stage on the planet. While Qingdao Oriental Movie Metropolis adds 40 stages and the largest underwater tank in Asia, and Wanda Studios Qingdao adds another 50 plus the Shanghai Songjiang Film Industrial Park LED volume for hybrid green-screen and virtual production work.

Here is how this works in practice. Chedun Movie Town on the Shanghai outskirts and the Mediaset-equivalent CCTV facilities in Beijing round out the network for fashion, commercials and Chinese TV drama. Recent productions including Frant Gwo's Wandering Earth I and II, Wuershan's Creation of the Gods Trilogy, the Tencent-Netflix Three-Body Problem and Zhang Yimou's The Great Wall with ILM all anchored major chroma-key sequences across the Hengdian and Qingdao stage network. Portable green screen kits move into warehouse spaces and heritage locations when productions need a chroma-key setup outside the studio system, with cyclorama walls, drive-in skill and the soundproofing that feature production demands.

Clean keys depend on even backdrop illumination, careful talent separation and disciplined spill control, and our Chinese gaffers bring that experience from the VFX-heavy Wandering Earth franchise, the Creation of the Gods Trilogy and the Tencent-Netflix Three-Body Problem unit shoots. Lighting packages run flicker-free HMI and tunable LED units from ARRI SkyPanel, Creamsource Vortex and the Shenzhen-manufactured Aputure Nova and Amaran lines that now dominate the Chinese rental market, with colour science matched to the downstream pipeline and reference charts shot at every camera reset.

The picture on the ground is more specific. Tracking markers, reference photography and HDRI capture are handled at the plate stage, with footage flowing into the Chinese VFX pipeline at Pixomondo Beijing, Base FX with Beijing and Los Angeles offices, Digital Domain China, MPC Shanghai, Mindwalk Studios and Light Chaser Animation for compositing, motion capture and real-time rendering. NRTA pre-shoot approvals run through our Chinese business entity partner alongside the standard CCNL-equivalent crew booking under the CFA and CFCC framework, with the Qingdao 40 per cent rebate and Hengdian incentive scheme applied to qualifying chroma-key unit spend through the 17 per cent VAT invoicing handled by the Chinese partner.
