SCENE 01 / GIMBAL FILMING

Gimbal Filming Services

Smooth, stabilized camera movement for dynamic cinematography across China.

Scroll

Gimbal filming uses electronically stabilized camera platforms to deliver fluid, vibration-free movement while following action. From handheld units for lightweight mirrorless cameras through to heavy-lift rigs supporting cinema packages, gimbals unlock dynamic shooting scenarios across China — from the neon streets of Shanghai's Bund and Beijing's hutongs to the period backlots of Hengdian and the Huangshan mountain ranges. DJI, the world's leading gimbal manufacturer, is headquartered in Shenzhen.

We provide gimbal systems and experienced operators across China, coordinating equipment out of Hengdian World Studios, Qingdao Oriental Movie Metropolis and Wanda Studios. Our team matches gear and crew to your shoot — whether it's a Ronin 2 for a Shanghai walk-and-talk or a heavy-lift MoVI for a period drama on Hengdian's 130+ stages — working alongside local partnerships required for foreign productions.

DJI Ronin and MoVI operators from Shenzhen factory floor to Hengdian backlots

Gimbal filming in China benefits from a near-zero-distance supply line to the global gimbal manufacturing base. DJI is headquartered in Shenzhen and the Ronin 2, RS 4 Pro and Ronin 4D-Flex inventory is available with same-day spares across the Pearl River Delta. Our gimbal operators work across Beijing, Shanghai, Hengdian, Qingdao and Shenzhen, drawing on the talent pool that flew on Frant Gwo's Wandering Earth I and II at Qingdao Oriental Movie Metropolis, Zhang Yimou's recent period features at Hengdian World Studios and the Three-Body Problem unit work for Tencent and Netflix.

Here is how this works in practice. Gear ranges from compact RS 3 Pro handhelds for mirrorless and lightweight cinema bodies through heavy-lift MoVI Pro and MoVI Carbon rigs supporting ARRI Alexa Mini LF, RED V-Raptor and Sony Venice 2 packages on the larger Hengdian period dramas, with Tilta Gravity and DJI Ronin 4D systems used for stylised single-operator walk-and-talk sequences along the Shanghai Bund, in the Beijing hutongs and across the Huangshan and Zhangjiajie mountain trails. The Qingdao underwater tank, the largest of its kind in Asia at 12,000 cubic metres, runs Ronin and MoVI rigs in waterproof housings for the submarine and naval sequences that Chinese blockbusters increasingly commission.

Our process pairs the gimbal package with a Chinese business entity partner — needed for foreign productions filming on the mainland — and routes the shoot through NRTA pre-shoot approvals coordinated with the local film administration office. Gear selection matches gimbal capacity to the camera build at the prep stage, with balancing and tuning handled in the rental house workshop before stage delivery, and lens-change protocols defined alongside the focus puller for the wireless follow-focus integration.

The picture on the ground is more specific. On set the gimbal operator works with a dedicated camera assistant for battery rotation, lens swaps and on-the-fly recalibration, with the broader Chinese crew working under the same CCTV-standard technical protocols used on domestic feature shoots. Wireless video monitoring runs to the director and DP village over Teradek or Hollyland Pyro links — the Shenzhen-manufactured Hollyland systems are increasingly the local default. The 17 per cent VAT invoicing runs through the Chinese partner entity, with Qingdao 40 per cent rebate and Hengdian incentive paperwork applied to qualifying gimbal-unit spend where the production qualifies under the NRTA, CFA and CFCC framework.

FAQ

Stabilized Cinematography Expertise

What gimbal systems do you provide in China?

We operate all major gimbal platforms including DJI Ronin 2, RS3 Pro, RS4 Pro, Freefly MoVI Pro and MoVI Carbon out of Beijing, Shanghai, Hengdian and Qingdao. With DJI headquartered in Shenzhen, equipment support and spares are immediately accessible.

Can you support heavy cinema cameras?

Yes, our heavy-lift gimbals support ARRI Alexa Mini LF, RED V-Raptor, Sony Venice 2 and similar cinema cameras used on productions at Hengdian World Studios and Qingdao Oriental Movie Metropolis. We ensure proper balancing and power management for extended shoots.

Do you provide operators or just equipment?

We provide experienced gimbal operators as standard, drawn from China's Asian talent pool. Our operators understand both the technical systems and the cinematographic requirements for smooth, intentional movement, and work seamlessly with Chinese crews.

What shots work best with gimbals?

Gimbals excel at walk-and-talk sequences, tracking through spaces, following action, reveal shots, and long takes with movement. They provide smooth motion while maintaining mobility that dolly or Steadicam setups cannot match.

How do gimbals compare to Steadicam?

Gimbals are lighter, faster to set up, and more mobile than Steadicam. However, Steadicam provides a different aesthetic quality and can handle heavier cameras. We can advise on the best solution for your specific shots.

Can you integrate wireless follow focus?

Yes, we integrate wireless follow focus systems with gimbal setups, allowing a focus puller to control lens remotely while the operator concentrates on movement. We also support wireless video monitoring.

Productions in China that need this often pair it with 360° Video Production, Virtual Production, and Thermal Imaging for full coverage. Most projects also draw on LED Lighting Systems and Director of Photography Services.
