SCENE 01 / POWER DISTRIBUTION SYSTEMS

Power Distribution Systems

Safe, reliable on-set power for film and TV production in China.

Scroll

Power distribution systems safely route power from power packs or mains sources to lighting, camera, and production gear across a set. Pro distro boxes, cable runs, and breaker panels balance the loads, ground the system properly, and feed safe power to each department.

We supply power distribution systems set up for your production's power needs and set layout. Our team works with your gaffer and best boy to put the right capacity, cable lengths, and safety gear in place for each location on your schedule.

Code-compliant 220V/50Hz distribution across Chinese sets and heritage sites

Power distribution on a Chinese set has to bridge two worlds. On one side sits the 220V/50Hz grid that feeds Hengdian World Studios, Qingdao Wanda Movie Metropolis, and the purpose-built stages around Beijing's Huairou District. On the other sit the tight electrical spaces inside Forbidden City courtyards, Shanghai Bund landmarks, and Cultural Relics Bureau–covered siheyuan, where ground penetrations and visible cabling are banned. Our distribution packages draw on Beijing and Shanghai rental house stock — main distro boxes, sub-distribution units, lunchboxes, plus Schuko, Chinese 5-pin, and multi-region adapters that bridge Chinese and global film gear.

State Grid (国家电网) tie-ins handle backlot loads at Hengdian and Qingdao Wanda when the production is large enough to need them. Chinese best boys electric size the feeders and balance phases across 32A and 63A circuits. Each tie-in gets logged, so the gaffer's load plan turns safely into a panel layout that meets Chinese electrical code and the safety needs of Chinese union crews on co-productions.

Power packs scale to the job. Compact 20kVA Honda EU units feed a single-camera commercial in Shanghai's former French Concession, while 500kVA Cummins and Caterpillar tow plants handle bigger loads. Yuchai Chinese-made gensets step in where carnet logistics make import too hard, placed for feature work on the edge of a Yunnan or Inner Mongolia exterior. Silent housings keep dialogue clean for sound-sensitive scenes near Bund hotels and Beijing hutong homes. Cable runs travel with ramps to keep the crew safe across heritage streets closed to traffic. Each package ships with RCD and MCB protection.

The picture on the ground is more specific. Chinese power-pack operators handle fuel logistics and State Grid tie-ins when venue setup allows. If a primary unit faults mid-shoot, they arrange same-day swap-outs from the Beijing and Shanghai depots. Our coordinator stays on call through wrap to manage late location additions across the schedule.

FAQ

Power Distribution Expertise

What generator sizes do you provide?

We supply power packs from 20kVA to 500kVA, including super-silent units for sound-sensitive shoots. Our team links multiple power packs for larger power needs. Battery hybrid systems and tow plant units cover many location needs.

How do you calculate power requirements?

We run detailed load calculations based on your lighting package, camera and DIT needs, video village, and every other electrical load. Our plan factors in startup loads and adds enough headroom for safe, reliable operation.

Can you provide power at historic locations?

Yes. We specialize in powering shoots at China's historic locations, including imperial palaces, churches, and covered sites. Our team works to each venue's needs, runs the right cabling without damage, and meets preservation guidelines.

Do you handle tie-ins to venue power?

We set up tie-ins to venue electrical systems where suitable, working with licensed Chinese electricians and venue tech staff. Our team checks available power, arranges short-term connections, and makes sure of safe disconnection after your shoot.

What about power for remote locations?

For remote exteriors without mains power, we supply full power-pack solutions, including fuel management, noise control, and multi-day running. We plan the logistics so power stays uninterrupted across your shoot.

How do you ensure electrical safety on set?

All gear is PAT tested and well rated. We fit RCD protection throughout, hire licensed electricians, and follow Chinese electrical safety rules. Detailed records and safety briefings keep the crew aware.

Productions in China that need this often pair it with Power Solutions for full coverage. Most projects also draw on Grip Equipment and Portable Power Solutions.
