Location scouting in China runs across one of the largest and most varied filming geographies on the planet. The imperial Beijing axis at the Forbidden City, Temple of Heaven and Summer Palace, the Shanghai Bund and Pudong skyline, the Zhangjiajie karst pillars that informed the Avatar landscapes, the Yunnan terraced rice paddies, the Silk Road desert routes through Xinjiang and Gansu, the Hainan tropical coast, the Great Wall sections from Badaling to Jinshanling, the Hengdian World Studios backlots replicating Tang and Ming dynasty architecture, and the Pingyao and Hongcun walled towns that hold Ming and Qing-period stonework in original condition.

Here is how this works in practice. Our scouts come out of the Beijing and Shanghai location community that services the Huayi Brothers, Bona Film Group, Wanda Pictures, Alibaba Pictures, Tencent Pictures and iQIYI Pictures features along with the international units routing through CFCC, and they keep a curated database that maps each visual brief. Ancient palace, neon megacity, mountain karst, terraced paddy, desert dune, tropical beach, period walled town — to the verified sites that can actually deliver on permit. They hold named contacts at the Cultural Relics Bureau heritage administration offices, the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Radio and TV, the Shanghai Film Bureau and the provincial film bureaus that sign location-specific approvals.

Operationally our scouts produce the brief in Mandarin and English with photo paperwork, video walkthroughs and the technical-access notes the line producer and DP need to lock the lookbook. Drone reconnaissance runs under CAAC registration with a Chinese phone number — Beijing airspace stays heavily restricted and most central-zone work needs special clearance. And the permit window for every option includes the Cultural Relics Bureau lead time, the Public Security Bureau coordination for road work and crowd scenes, and the sensitive-area paperwork that Tibet, Xinjiang and military-adjacent zones need.

The picture on the ground is more specific.
