Production Designers
Visionary production designers who build vivid worlds drawn from China's ancient palaces, old courtyard styles, and futuristic city skylines.
The production designer leads the art department and creates the whole visual look of a film or TV show. In China, this role draws on thousands of years of building heritage — from the Forbidden City and the Great Wall to Shanghai's Art Deco Bund, Beijing's hutong courtyards, and the Temple of Heaven's sacred shapes. Our designers know how to turn these distinct Chinese settings into gripping screen worlds.
We connect you with production designers who bring deep local knowledge and world-class craft to each project. We give you access to Hengdian World Studios, the world's largest film studio complex, and to Qingdao Oriental Movie Metropolis. Our network makes sure your visual world is built with the right resources across Asia's largest studio setup.

On Location
Production design rooted in the Tim Yip lineage and the Zhang Yimou collaborator pool
Chinese production design carries a uniquely deep heritage in modern cinema. It is anchored to Tim Yip's Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon Oscar in 2001. That win was a costume-and-production-design crossover that set a global visual language for wuxia and Chinese historical cinema. The heritage also runs through the Zhang Yimou collaborator pool, led by Cao Jiuping on Hero and Curse of the Golden Flower, Huo Tingxiao on the Chen Kaige catalogue, and the late Zhao Tianxue.
Our network reaches into that lineage. It also draws on the parallel Hong Kong tradition of William Chang Suk-ping on the Wong Kar-wai films, plus the Sixth Generation realist tradition of Tu Yi with Lou Ye. We vet designers on verified Golden Rooster, Hua Biao, Hundred Flowers, or global festival credits before matching them to a production. The network spans everything from the Hengdian-based period epic to Shanghai 1930s Art Deco, modern Shenzhen futurism, and the regional ethnic-minority styles of Yunnan, Tibet, and Xinjiang.
On the build side, the network ties into Hengdian World Studios with its standing Tang, Song, Ming, Qing, and Republic-era street sets, the Qingdao Oriental Movie Metropolis forty-stage complex with underwater tank, Wanda Studios, and the Shanghai Film Group facilities. Senior production designers run art departments through a set sequence: director vision and reference, concept boards and color script, full set drawings and model packages, construction oversight, dressing handover to the set decorator and props master, and daily scene matching.
The picture on the ground gets more specific. Construction comes from the carpentry, scenic-painting, and traditional-craft workshops clustered around Hengdian and Beijing's southern outer-ring industrial zones, where lacquerwork, hardwood joinery, and tile-roof craftspeople work at competitive rates. Global co-productions get bilingual department heads, State Administration of Cultural Heritage permit support for filming inside the Forbidden City and Summer Palace, and CCNL-equivalent, NRTA-compliant payroll and inputs.

FAQ
Production Design Expertise
What's the difference between a production designer and art director?
The production designer leads the art department, owns the overall visual concept, and works right with the director. The art director reports to the production designer and carries out that vision — running construction, leading the team, and handling day-to-day operations.
How do production designers work with Chinese heritage architecture?
Our production designers have deep experience at China's protected heritage sites, including the Forbidden City, Great Wall, and the Summer Palace. They know the State Administration of Cultural Heritage permit rules and how to win the approvals needed to film at these iconic locations.
Can you handle both studio builds and locations?
Yes. Our production designers excel at blending studio builds at Hengdian World Studios and Qingdao Oriental Movie Metropolis with practical locations across China. They design sets that match location work and adapt real spaces to serve your story's visual needs.
What about period productions in China?
Our production designers have deep experience with historical periods, from ancient dynasties through modern eras. Hengdian alone holds standing period sets that span many Chinese eras. Our teams reach research resources and craftspeople skilled in traditional Chinese building methods.
Do you provide the full art department?
Yes. We can staff full art departments scaled to your production. This covers art directors, set decorators, prop masters, construction coordinators, and every supporting role, backed by local Chinese partners who handle production needs.
How do production designers work with other departments?
Production designers work closely with cinematography on lighting, costume on the visual palette, VFX on digital extensions, and locations on practical concerns. They are the visual hub that ties all design elements together.
