Storyboard Artist Services

Visual pre-production built on China's ancient ink painting traditions and its booming animation industry.

A storyboard artist turns a screenplay into a series of visual panels. These panels map out camera angles, shot framing, and scene blocking before filming starts. China's storyboard artists draw on a visual heritage that spans thousands of years, from ink painting and scroll narrative art to the modern manhua tradition. That heritage now meets the fast growth of one of the world's largest animation and film industries.

NeedAFixer connects you with Chinese storyboard artists who blend traditional visual storytelling with the latest digital tools. Whether you film at Qingdao Movie Metropolis, Hengdian World Studios, or across Beijing and Shanghai, our network supplies pros skilled in features, animated shoots, commercials, and global co-productions.

Storyboarding from the BFA, China Academy of Art, and Sichuan Fine Arts pipelines

Chinese storyboard artists work inside a uniquely deep illustration tradition. That tradition takes in Tang Dynasty figure painting, Song landscape, Ming and Qing porcelain narrative, and traditional ink wash. It also draws on the Sichuanese woodblock printing tradition and the modern manhua scene, which runs from Old Master Q and Lao Fu Zi in the Hong Kong canon through Bilibili anime and the NetEase Animation comics divisions.

Our network is anchored to graduates of five schools: the Beijing Film Academy animation track, the China Academy of Art in Hangzhou, the Sichuan Fine Arts Institute, the Tsinghua Academy of Arts and Design, and the Central Academy of Fine Arts. These five schools supply most of the senior board talent now staffing Light Chaser Animation Shanghai, Tencent Animation, NetEase Animation, Bilibili anime, and the Wandering Earth and Three-Body Problem live-action pre-viz teams. Skill spans live-action shot planning, animated feature and series storyboarding, commercial board work for the Spring Festival ad cycle, and the dense action choreography boards that define wuxia and gangster cinema.

Production runs through a set order: director reference and reference deck, thumbnail beat passes, tight black-and-white boards, colour-script overlays where needed, an animatic with timing and sound design, on-set reference packs, and post-pickup boards for reshoots. Boards ship in the Storyboard Pro, ShotPro, and Procreate pipelines that match global post houses, and bilingual Mandarin-English supervisors manage the time-zone split between Shanghai and Los Angeles or London creative leads.

Productions get right-sized teams: a single artist for short-form and commercial work, two-to-four-person crews for episodic and feature pre-viz, or full storyboard departments embedded with the assistant director and DP for action-heavy shoots at Hengdian, Qingdao Movie Metropolis, or location work in Xinjiang and Tibet. Global co-productions get NRTA-aware deliverables, IP-clearance support, and revision cycles squeezed to twenty-four to forty-eight hours when the shoot day nears.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

How does Chinese visual arts tradition influence storyboarding?

China's age-old traditions of ink painting, scroll narrative, and manhua comic art give local storyboard artists a distinctive eye for composition, visual flow, and emotion. These skills blend with modern digital tools to make storyboards that look refined and stay production-ready.
