Film Director Services

Creative vision rooted in Chinese cinema's rich storytelling heritage.

Chinese cinema's Fifth and Sixth Generation directors — Zhang Yimou, Chen Kaige, and Jia Zhangke — won global fame through sweeping historical epics and intimate social stories. Today, China's directors work where the world's largest home box office meets a fast-growing global co-production scene.

Our network reaches Hengdian World Studios (the world's largest film studio complex), Qingdao Oriental Movie Metropolis, and production hubs across Beijing and Shanghai. From the Great Wall and the karst hills of Guilin to Shanghai's futuristic skyline, we connect you with directors who know China's vast production world.

On Location

Directors shaped by Fifth Generation, Sixth Generation, and the new Chinese tentpole era

Chinese directing carries a lineage that starts with the Fifth Generation: Zhang Yimou (Hero, Curse of the Golden Flower, the Beijing 2008 opening ceremonies), Chen Kaige (Farewell My Concubine), Tian Zhuangzhuang, and Huang Jianxin. It runs through the Sixth Generation observation work of Jia Zhangke (Still Life, Mountains May Depart, founder of Pingyao IFF), Lou Ye, Wang Xiaoshuai, and Diao Yinan (Berlin Golden Bear for Black Coal, Thin Ice). It also takes in the Hong Kong auteur tradition of Wong Kar-wai, Stanley Kwan, Ann Hui, John Woo, and Johnnie To. The line reaches into the modern tentpole era, anchored by Frant Gwo (Wandering Earth's box-office record), Wuershan (Creation of the Gods Trilogy, Painted Skin), Bi Gan (Long Day's Journey Into Night at Cannes), Wen Muye (Dying to Survive), and the late Hu Bo (An Elephant Sitting Still at Berlin posthumous).

Our director roster reflects this full range. It includes Beijing Film Academy and Central Academy of Drama directing-track alumni who work in feature, prestige series, fashion, and large-format commercial, with credits across Shanghai IFF, Beijing IFF, Pingyao IFF, FIRST IFF, Golden Rooster, Hundred Flowers, Hong Kong Film Awards, and Golden Horse honours.

On the production side, our directors work across Hengdian World Studios (the world's largest backlot, with more than 130 stages plus dynastic standing sets), Qingdao Oriental Movie Metropolis (forty stages and the underwater tank where Wandering Earth and Creation of the Gods built scale), Beijing's Huairou film base, and Shanghai Film Park. These sites draw on locations that span the Forbidden City, the Great Wall, the karst peaks of Zhangjiajie and Guilin, the Gobi and Taklamakan deserts of Xinjiang, the rice terraces of Yunnan, and the Pudong and Lujiazui skylines for modern work.

The day-to-day picture is more specific. We pair non-Mandarin-speaking directors with bilingual first ADs and producers so creative intent moves cleanly into Mandarin-speaking crew culture. The network also brings in cinematographers in the Christopher Doyle and Zhao Xiaoding lineage, editors trained alongside Matthieu Laclau on Jia Zhangke pictures, and production designers in the Tim Yip and William Chang tradition. We set up China Film Administration script approval, NRTA content review, and provincial subsidy compliance — with Qingdao Film Office's 40% rebates among the most competitive — from prep through delivery to the Chinese theatrical or streaming release window.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What does a film director do?

A film director in China leads the creative vision of a production in the world's largest film market. Under the China Film Administration's rules, these directors run shoots that range from intimate art films to huge commercial blockbusters across a wide array of locations.

What skills should a director have?

Directors in China must handle the country's rules, including content approval steps. They also need visual flair suited to China's varied geography — from ancient cities to modern megacities — and the skill to lead large Mandarin-speaking crews.

What types of productions need a director?

China serves home blockbusters, global co-productions, streaming content, and commercials. With Hengdian's huge backlots, Qingdao's water tanks, and sites that span deserts, mountains, and megacities, directors here work at every scale.

How do you match a director to my production?

We review your project's needs, genre, and target audience, then suggest directors from our Chinese network whose work fits your vision. Our team sets up meetings in Beijing or Shanghai and guides you through the co-production framework.

Can a director also handle writing or editing?

Many Chinese directors handle both writing and directing, especially in the art-film tradition. On large shoots at Hengdian or Qingdao, broad department structures back the director's vision. We advise on the right creative team setup.
