Director of Photography Services

Experienced DPs for film, TV, commercials, and documentaries across China, from Beijing to Shanghai and Guangzhou.

The director of photography, also called the cinematographer, shapes a film's visual language. They do this through lighting, camera movement, lens choice, and composition. In China, DPs work with huge visual variety, from Beijing's imperial build style to Shanghai's neon-lit skyline. They work closely with the director to set the look and mood of each scene.

We connect you with 100+ directors of photography across China whose reels span features, series, commercials, and music videos. Our network includes cinematographers skilled with the newest digital cinema cameras and film formats. Many hold credits at Hengdian World Studios and global shoots.

On Location

Chinese cinematography from a globally decorated tier

Chinese cinematography sits in the global front rank and has held that place for three decades. Christopher Doyle shaped the visual language of Hong Kong art cinema. His Wong Kar-wai work spans Chungking Express, In the Mood for Love, 2046, and Happy Together. He stays the single most cited Asian DP working today. Zhao Xiaoding ASC guided Zhang Yimou through Hero, Curse of the Golden Flower, and the more recent Shadow and One Second. He now stands as the senior Chinese feature DP working at global scale.

Hou Yong and Lu Yue carried the rest of Zhang Yimou's classic period, Not One Less and To Live respectively. Yu Lik-wai shot the entire Jia Zhangke canon from Platform through Caught by the Tides. Bao Dexi delivered the Wandering Earth saga for Frant Gwo. Mid-tier DPs in Beijing and Shanghai carry credits across iQIYI, Tencent Video, Youku, and Bilibili premium drama. They also shoot the global commercial accounts run through Shanghai's Anfu Road and Beijing's 798 agency belt. The senior DPs in our China network trained alongside these names at Beijing Film Academy's cinematography track, or came up through the same camera-assistant pipeline.

Matching is brief-driven and works both ways. We open each conversation with reference material, format, schedule, and budget under the Qingdao 40% rebates and any provincial film-fund support. We then return a curated shortlist of three to five DPs whose reels show the exact tonal range your project needs. That range might be a high-contrast Beijing hutong night exterior, soft natural-light interiors in a Pingyao courtyard, observational documentary across the Yunnan terraced fields or the Tibetan plateau (sensitive-zone permits allowing), or stylised product cinematography on a Hengdian or Qingdao Wanda soundstage.

The picture on the ground is more specific. Our DPs work fluently across ARRI Alexa 35, Mini LF, Sony Venice 2, Burano, RED V-Raptor, and DJI Ronin 4D systems. They rent these through Beijing Film Gear, Shanghai Film Studio rental, and Hengdian on-site rental houses. Each one brings working relationships with key gaffers, grip teams, and 1st ACs, so the camera department arrives pre-composed. Owner-operator DPs stand ready where budget favours a packaged camera kit. We verify BFA standing, ASC or SOC Asia membership where applicable, and English working ability before booking.

FAQ

Our DP Network

What experience levels of DPs do you provide?

We give DPs across all experience levels in China. Emerging cinematographers suit indie and low-budget projects. Mid-level DPs bring solid Chinese commercial and documentary credits. Senior DPs carry feature film and global broadcast experience. We then match experience to your budget and project needs.

How do you match DPs to projects?

We review your creative brief, reference materials, and budget to shortlist Chinese DPs with the right genre experience and a matching style. You receive curated showreels and can ask for direct conversations with candidates before booking.

What camera systems do your DPs work with?

Our DPs in China know all major cinema camera systems, including ARRI Alexa, RED, Sony Venice, Blackmagic, and Canon cinema lines. Many focus on certain systems, but all adapt to production needs and Chinese rental availability.

Do DPs come with their own equipment?

Some owner-operator DPs in China bring their own camera packages, while others work with rented gear. We arrange gear sourcing based on your preference and budget, whether through DP-owned kit, Chinese rental houses, or production-supplied gear.

Can you provide international DPs for shoots in China?

Yes. We source global DPs for shoots in China, handling logistics and planning. We also give Chinese DPs for global shoots needing local cinematography talent abroad.

What's included in DP day rates?

Standard DP day rates in China cover on-set cinematography during production hours. Pre-production work such as tech scouts, shot listing, and meetings is mostly billed separately. Gear, camera assistants, and late hours cost extra based on project scope.
