SCENE 01 / UNDERWATER CAMERA OPERATORS

Underwater Filming Services

Certified underwater cinematography for marine, pool, and aquatic productions across China.

Scroll

Underwater camera operators pair pro diving certification with cinema camera skill to capture footage below the surface. In China, our operators work across many marine settings, including the South China Sea, Hainan's tropical waters, and the freshwater lakes of Yunnan. Each shoot delivers clear, striking subaquatic visuals.

We connect you with certified underwater camera pros who blend diving experience with cinematographic skill. Our network includes operators who know the major studio water tanks in Beijing and Shanghai, plus Wuxi National Digital Film Industrial Park. Our team sets up waterproof housing, lighting, safety divers, and logistics so your underwater sequences are captured safely.

Certified Chinese underwater DPs from Hainan reefs to Wuxi water tanks

Dive shooting in China spans an unusual mix of settings. Hainan and Sanya in the South China Sea offer tropical reefs and warm, clear water. The Pearl River Delta and Hong Kong harbour suit industrial and narrative coverage. Freshwater work runs on Lake Taihu near Wuxi and Lake Dianchi at Kunming. There is also large studio-tank capacity at Wuxi National Digital Film Industrial Park, China Film Group's Beijing water-stage, and Shanghai Film Studio facilities.

Our roster of more than 30 certified operators holds PADI, SSI, and CMAS instructor-level certifications, plus HSE-equivalent commercial diving qualifications for technical sequences. Their credits span Frant Gwo's Wandering Earth submarine sequences, mainland feature swimming-pool drama, NRTA-cleared marine documentary work in the South China Sea, and inbound underwater-tank shoots hosted at Wuxi.

The on-the-ground picture is more specific. Camera packages run ARRI Alexa Mini LF, RED Komodo and V-Raptor, and Sony Venice 2 and FX6 bodies. These sit inside Gates, Nauticam, and Hydroflex housings with calibrated dome ports. We pair them with Keldan and Light & Motion underwater LEDs, HMI-housed source units, and a surface-monitor relay over fibre tethers for director-village viewing.

A production may brief actor-in-water sequences at a Beijing or Shanghai studio tank, marine-life coverage in the Sanya reef belt, a Hong Kong harbour industrial pull, or surface-to-underwater transition shots on a Hainan tropical coast. Each one receives a full dive plan, not a generic operator quote. Our coordinators write risk assessments matched to depth, tide, and visibility. They assign certified safety divers and dive supervisors under Chinese diving rules and industry safety standards, plan hyperbaric chamber standby for the deeper exterior sequences, and arrange water-safety coordinators and on-set actor coaching for non-diving talent in controlled shallow water.

A few details matter here. Studio-tank shoots include dedicated underwater lighting packages and surface support in the day rate. Marine exteriors carry boat charter through Sanya and Pearl River Delta dive operators, with separate ATA carnet handling on imported housings when the production brings its own glass. The same vendor track record covers feature, drama, documentary, brand campaign, and tourism content under one production envelope that absorbs the 17% VAT.

FAQ

Professional Underwater Operations

What certifications do your underwater operators hold?

Our underwater camera operators hold pro PADI, CMAS, or equal certifications suited to the filming depths and conditions. Many also hold pro dive shooting certifications, plus HSE or equal commercial diving qualifications for complex shoots.

What camera systems can you use underwater?

We run underwater housings for ARRI Alexa Mini, RED Komodo/V-Raptor, Sony Venice/FX6, and Blackmagic cameras. The housing we choose depends on your camera package, the features you need, and the depth. We also use specialized underwater cinema cameras.

Can you film with actors underwater?

Yes. We work with trained water safety coordinators and coach actors for underwater work. Non-diving actors can be filmed in controlled shallow water with safety divers on hand. Complex underwater stunts need special planning and safety measures.

What locations in China are suitable for underwater filming?

China offers many underwater filming spots: the South China Sea (clear water, marine life), the East China Sea coast (dramatic conditions), lakes and rivers (freshwater settings), and many studio tanks and pools for controlled shoots.

How do you handle underwater lighting?

We use specialized underwater LED and HMI lights in waterproof housings. For pool and tank work, above-water lighting can reach the subject well. Deep or murky water needs its own underwater lighting package, planned during pre-production.

What are the safety requirements for underwater filming?

All underwater work needs risk assessments, dive plans, certified safety divers, surface support, and emergency steps. We follow Chinese diving rules and film industry safety standards. Complex sequences may need a hyperbaric chamber on standby.

Productions in China that need this often pair it with Steadicam & Gimbal Operators, Director of Photography Services, and Multi-Camera Shoots for full coverage. Most projects also draw on Underwater Lighting and Camera & Cinematography.
